What We're Working On
Code For Democracy brings people together to work on projects designed to improve the state of democracy in the United States. If you have a project and are looking for talent, please contact us.
"Break the Bubble" - these days most people's news outlets and social media become echo chambers that reflect their own feelings. It would be great to develop an app or website that could expose people to legitimate news from opposing sources.
Students Learn Students Vote Coalition - many partners, very many universities, lots of spreadsheets, no database. Database and appropriate web portal would completely open up their game.
Axiologue is a crowd-sourced, community-based project the helps people understand the ethical histories of products and companies. We know the features and price of any given smartphone, but what about its environmental history? The working conditions of its factories? Axiologue aims to bring some order and structure to the swirling morass of ethical product data, and empower you to only support companies that are building a world in line with your own values. See our (still developing) flagship project at http://www.mindful.click, and come join our community of hackers, artists, activists, and more, all working to help you vote with your wallet.
Find ways to encapsulate the political and social narratives that have happened and will perpetuate, and their subsequent consequences and then to remind people of them closer to the midterm election, hopefully with the intention of energizing folks to vote.
Our goal is to use the power of mobile gaming to get people involved in the political process. We want to build a game that takes advantage of all the capablities of mobile devices and social networking to create a fun and interactive experience. Ideally, our goal is to get those who are not usually a part of the political process become so through the use of this game. The game will allow users to connect with their social circles and nearby citizens to compete for trophies, points, rewards, etc for political action; similar to xBox achievements, Fitbit running groups, etc. The plan is to allow users to get points through voting, contacting their reps, registering to vote, reading politically focused articles, taking current news quizes, and other such things. We have many ways of incentivizing users to do things by treating the points/rewards system like a micro-economy where tasks are given different point values depending on level of involvement, location, fequency, etc. This is just a small portion of the ideas we have for this project. Please contact us in the #gamify-democracy channel in Slack for more details! We welcome anyone to join in our cause!
In order to reverse societal damage done by budget cuts to key programs (environmental protection, refugee support, public education, reproductive health), we can create a funding program that restores resources to the social programs that define America. We must go beyond the notion of charitable giving, and instead view this funding as a moral obligation based on our individual financial standings. Americans with money and a moral conscious across the political spectrum can stand up for the programs they care about, with no governmental confirmation required! It's time to put our money where our (protesting) mouths are, and fund the resistance!
At the border anyone can be stopped and held for whatever reason, citizen or non-citizen, for whatever time, and apparently without due process. Often phones are confiscated, leaving people unable to contact relatives or friends for help, of course, this tends to effect people of color. In order to make people feel safer when crossing the border and to hold our govt accountable, I believe an app that would allow people to check-in before they cross the border, and then mark themselves safe when they've gotten through. If they don't makre themselves safe, then friends/family/potentially lawyers would be notified and then at least someone could respond.
